Polish artist Bezt, better known as part of the Etam Cru together with Sainer, is about to open his inaugural solo exhibition in New York City at Spoke Art, curated by Los Angeles-based gallery, Thinkspace. Opening on October 21st, Beautiful Mistakes will include a series of new paintings and drawings, mostly focused on portraying mundane characters and scenes with a subtle, surreal twist to them. Recap: Joan Cornellà – “A Solo Show” @ Spoke-Art

San Francisco’s Spoke Art Gallery is currently running the last couple days of a solo show by Joan Cornellà. For his US debut, the Barcelona-based artist produced several original acrylics on canvas as well as a series of fine art giclee prints of his popular comics. Though primarily showing his work on the most competitive platform there is, the internet, Cornellà’s dark, unsettling, sometimes even offensive comics quickly became a viral phenomenon. Mixing a playful 1950’s advertising or airline safety pamphlets aesthetics and a morbid story line, the artist creates work that […]

Showing: “Paper Cuts” @ Spoke Art

A couple of weeks back, AM got to spend some time in and around San Francisco. One of the exhibitions on the calendar was Spoke Art’s group exhibition Paper Cuts. Curated by Jessica Ross, the show features eatures an array of 11 international artists each working with cut paper (natch) but with a variety of styles, techniques and of course end results. The art of paper cutting is traditionally a very unforgiving medium. There’s no eraser or additional layer of paint to disguise a mistake in […]

Openings: Craww & Tatiana Suarez – ‘Through The Veil’ @ Spoke Art

Spoke Art’s latest exhibition opened on October 3rd in San Francisco. Through The Veil features the work of Miami based Tatiana Suarez and Sheffield, UK’s Craww. The pairing have shown together previously at the SF space, so this exhibition serves as a triumphal return / reunion of sorts for the artists, who both depict the female form in very different ways. Craww’s sinuous renderings are completed in oils – a transition he recently made, apparently with great success judging by the delicate works exhibited here – as are […]

Openings: Jessica Hess – “Fade and Finish” @ Spoke Art

Last Friday evening, Spoke Art hosted Jessica Hess’s latest exhibition, Fade and Finish. With this body of work, she explored using gouache on paper (as opposed to predominately oil on canvas paintings in previous exhibitions) and depicted urban landscapes in both daylight and moonlight. In this show, she also explored realistically depicting texture that is inspired by wheat pastes in New York, as well as pinup images that grew out of her love of vintage radio and movies. Check out some pics from the opening […]

Last Thursday, Spoke Art opened its first annual Summer Group Show featuring a selection of up & coming local and international talent. For many of the artists, this show marks one of their first group shows with some looking forward to their debut solo shows in the near future. Released at the show was a giclee from San Francisco-based artist Xiau-Fong Wee (seen above) featuring one of her seemingly innocent animals wielding a contrasting violent weapon. Also featured in the show were original works by […]
