Rewind: June 24 – June 30

It’s been over a month since our last Rewind feature, so it’s past due that we share some videos that caught our eye in the recent weeks. Headlining things is a documentary behind the making of BOOKHEAD, a music video from JJ Doom directed by Stephen Powers aka ESPO. Along with a colorful backstory as to their history together and how things progressed up until the making of this video, the footage also features the two creatives explaining their thoughts behind the process as well […]

Openings: “Live Free” curated by Mike Maxwell @ Hellion Gallery

Opening on the same night as Space//Form in Portland, artist Mike Maxwell (pictured on the right above with Jocelyn Duke, Mark Dean Veca and Hellion owner Matt Wagner) curated a group exhibition at Hellion Gallery. Taking the exhibition’s title Live Free from the regular series of podcast interviews with fellow artists and creatives, and also his own ethos on life (see Mike’s tattooed knuckles in one of our pictures below), Maxwell brought together a selection of artists he has interviewed over time. With the podcast […]

Streets: Outside Lands (Part I) – Skinner (San Francisco)

Not only did the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco feature a great lineup of musicians (Neil Young, Santigold, Stevie Wonder, Jack White, and more), a select group of artists were also invited in to paint some murals. For the 5th annual event, Juxtapoz invited in Skinner, Dabs Myla, Curve, Brett Amory, Chez, Apex, Marcos LaFarga, Pastime, Satyr, Diet, Sam Flores, Nate Van Dyke and Eos Montana to paint in and around the festival grounds. Our man on scene, Berlin Tomas, was able to capture Skinner at work […]

Openings: Skinner – “The Fragile Art of Existence” @ Shooting Gallery

Never the one to shy away from challenging the viewer’s comfort zone while dragging them down to his own chaotic hell via the minions and demons from his mind, Skinner decided to take a step back from his usual creative process, which is typically done with a sense of attack and urgency. Last Saturday evening saw the opening of his latest show at Shooting Gallery, The Fragile Art of Existence, which features a new series of paintings where he decided to take a few risks […]

Preview: INLE @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Next Thursday, March 11th, the highly anticipated INLE group show will open at Gallery 1988’s Melrose location. Curated by Greg Simkins, the exhibition has been a long time coming for the LA-based artist as much of his work references his childhood favorite, Watership Down, a book that has had a profound impact on him as an artist. Featuring one of the best lineup of artists we have seen in a long time, this is definitely one show you don’t want to miss. Take some time […]

Openings: “Bro Palace” @ Park Life

Running till the end of the month at San Francisco’s Park Life store/gallery is “Bro Palace” a group showing consisting of five of the Bay Area’s more talented illustrators and artists. Skinner (covered), Jay Howell, Porous Walker, Deth P Sun and Ferris Plock have come together from every corner of Northern California, bringing their sardonic wit, whimsical musings, ironic observations, and sometimes a downright offensive style of humor and art together for a beautifully, culturally cohesive though jarringly disparate show of found media, drawings and […]
