Preview / Studio Visit: Mark Warren Jacques – ‘Each Story In This Story Has A Story’ @ Breeze Block Gallery

AM has always seen Mark Warren Jacques (interviewed) as much as a storyteller as an artist since we became immersed in his work a number of years ago. His latest solo exhibition opens this Thursday at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery and is entitled Each Story In This Story Has A Story. Heartfelt sentiments interlaced with abstracted narrative, explosive colours and the very tightest of line-work are just some of the elements that are to be found within his work. We got to spend some time with Mark and […]

Openings: Chris Johanson – “Windows” @ Mitchell-Innes & Nash

Chris Johanson has always been known for his bold use of raw materials and exuberant color pallet. Well ladies and gentleman, he has done it again with his latest show titled Windows now showing at Mitchell-Innes & Nash.  This latest show is a slight departure from Johanson’s usual work with less incorporation of figurative illustration and more emphasis on the meditative qualities of art making. Johanson approached this body of work as not only art and sculpture in the literal sense, but with the metaphysical in mind […]

After a showing at the LE Gallery in 2010 (covered), Canadian artist Tristram Lansdowne (interviewed) returns to the Toronto showspace for another solo come October 5th. Consisting of about ten watercolours, five new etching editions, and a sculpture, the new body of work is entitled Fata Morgana (defined as an unusual and complex form of superior mirage that is seen in a narrow band right above the horizon). Lansdowne’s work certainly can be described as such seeing how his intricate explorations of landscape and architecture are rendered in impossibly complicated […]

Luke Chueh – “I Am Your Plaything” @ Rotofugi

Last month in Chicago, the Rotofugi art toy boutique and gallery hosted all new works from Luke Chueh (interviewed) which was collectively entitled I Am Your Plaything. As we knew when we visited Luke’s studio, the paintings would be great success seeing that the attendees would be both toy and art aficionados, areas in which the LA-based artist has made a name for himself. The work featured a mixture of imagery that appealed to toy collectors with its clever in-jokes as well as fans of Chueh’s classic ironic and […]
