POW! WOW! ’15 / Openings: Thinkspace – “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum Of Art School

Last night, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked things off with a group show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum Of Art School (111 Victoria Street). Entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, the exhibition featured an impressive and diverse roster or artists, each contributing a 12 x 12″ piece. Streets: Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans – Mexico Expedition

A couple of weeks ago Pangeaseed.org wrapped up another praiseworthy project on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico – Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans – Mexico Expedition. For this event that took place from July 20-28, they invited a group of international artists to help raise awareness for the conservation of the ocean.  Similar to what they did with POW! WOW! Hawaii earlier this year (covered), 1xRun.com released a series of limited edition prints along with this event, with 100% of the proceeds going towards funding the programme. POW WOW ’13: Shark Toof & Angry Woebots

Another wall that was shared during POW WOW this year was the side of Fresh Cafe & Loft In Space, center of much of the activity surrounding the event. Getting up at this location were the LA-based artists Shark Toof and Angry Woebots with their signature characters (sharks and pandas) looking fierce. POW WOW ’13 (Part I)

With POW WOW 2013 in full swing, AM made the rounds yesterday to check out the progress as murals were going up all around the Kakaʻako district in Honolulu. Some of the artists featured at work in this first set of photos include Jeff Soto, Nychos, 123Klan, Angry Woebots, Dabs Myla, Madsteez, Shark Toof, Katch, Slick, and Rone & Wonderlust – who are collaborating on the mural seen above. Openings: Urban Legends @ L.A. Mart Design Center

Last weekend at the L.A. Mart Design Center, the Urban Legends auction and exhibition opened their doors to the public. With a series of largescale pieces, murals, photographs, and installations, artists around the world like Chor Boogie, Kofie, Mear One, Shark Toof, Cern, Estria, Martha Cooper, Sand One, Herakut, SANER, Estevan Oriol, Eriberto Oriol, Chaz Bojorquez, RETNA, Andrew Hem, and more were invited to put their work on display. In yet another example of street art and graffiti’s acceptance and proliferation in fine art institutions across America, the Portsmouth Museum of Art hosts Street a.k.a. Museum, curated by LeBasse Projects’ Beau LeBasse. The exhibition, which opened on May 11 and runs until Sept. 11 features familiar names: Bumblebee, Herakut (fresh off their beautification of Los Angeles), Shark Toof, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, and Andreas von Chrzanowski.
