Openings: “Major Work” @ Chandran Gallery

Earlier this month, Chandran Gallery in San Francisco opened a show curated by Andrew Schoultz entitled Major Work. The locally-based artist carefully selected a roster of participants that included himself, Alicia McCarthy, Aaron Noble, Kelsey Brookes, Revok, James Marshall (Dalek), Sam Friedman, Eric Yahnker, Mark Dean Veca, Saber, Hilary Pecis, Tim Biskup, Eric White, and Allison Schulnik. The premise behind the exhibition was for each artist to contribute a large-scale piece that they felt capture the essence of their work. The resulting show was quite stunning, as evidenced by […]

Showing: Revok – “Revok” @ Ruttkowski;68

With his most recent solo show titled Revok, Jason Williams aka REVOK introduced his latest concepts and works at Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany. Opened on August 14th, the show will stay on view until September 27th. The title of the shows refers to the concept of identity that he has been exploring since 1990, when he adopted the name as his alias. REVOK was only a tag or a pseudonym when he started out as a graffiti artist, but later on it became a frame within which he can define himself without social constraints. […]

Upcoming: Revok – “Revok” @ Ruttkowski;68

On August 14th, Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany will be welcoming back Jason William aka REVOK for another solo. The eponymously named exhibition continues the line of work seen in his Los Angeles show earlier this year (covered), and will follow the graffiti artist as he “goes beyond the self to examine perceptions of consciousness and unconsciousness.” This continues to be expressed in the form of increasingly complex assemblages formed from precisely cut pieces of wood that draw their influences from op-art, traditional folk pattern, and optical illusion elements. Discuss Revok […]

Opening: Revok – “Los Angeles” @ Library Street Collective (LA)

Last week, fans of Revok witnessed the opening of his first solo show in LA at a popup space hosted by the Library Street Collective. Entitled simply and appropriately Los Angeles, the new body of work marked a homecoming for the local graffiti legend and consisted of a series of assemblage works which proved to be created with a further refinement in his technique and vision. Hand cutting wood pieces and putting together complex geometric shapes, the composition is then painted over in patterns that draw their influences from […]
