Preview: Jerkface – “Donuts” @ Over The Influence, NYC

From 16th until 23rd of June, Jerkface will be having a pop-up solo show in his hometown of New York at 393 Broadway, New York. Represented by Hong Kong-based contemporary art gallery Over The Influence, the show will set the foundations for their permanent gallery space in LA, while also offering a peek inside their vibrant roster (Invader, Shepard Fairey, Nobuyoshi Araki, Cleon Peterson and Vhils). Jokingly basing his exhibition on Homer Simpson’s quote “Donuts. Is there anything they can’t do?”, the prolific NY-based muralist and world recognized artist has produced an […]

Preview: Maya Lujan @ Carmichael Gallery

It has been awhile since Carmichael Gallery has hosted a artist exhibition and if you are wondering what the reason may be, it’s because they have moved locations to a venue that’s two miles up Washington Blvd from the previous Culver City one. For its inaugural show, the gallery will unveil a solo show by LA-based artist Maya Lujan. For her new series of paintings, the artist researched the history of the new gallery venue (discovered that it used to be a puppet theatre) and […]

Preview: Miss Van – “Bailarinas” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening on this Thursday night, May 26th will be Bailarinas at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. As you can infer from the title of the show, this new body of work from Miss Van will feature her masked and costumed poupees dressed as ballerinas. This will be her first show in six years in New York, so fans of the French-born, Barcelona-based artist who first made her name in the streets best make their way over lest they have to wait another six years for her […]

Preview: Miles Mendenhall @ Half Gallery

Fresh off his run in Bravo’s “Work of Art”, Miles Mendenhall lands a solo show with Half Gallery (co-owned by Bill Powers, a judge in the show) in NYC. The talented youngster, who made it to the finale, and who many felt should have won the entire competition, continues the abstract enlargements he started in his finale show. In his recap for the finale episode of Work of Art, Jerry Saltz says that losing the competition may help Miles in the long run. So far, […]

Preview: Boogie – “The Uncovering” @ Carmichael Gallery

This Saturday, July 10, Carmichael Gallery in Culver City opens a show of photographs by international photographer and Brooklyn resident Boogie. The artist, who was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, started his photographic career by documenting rebellion and civil unrest during the civil war in his native land. He has taken that experience and applied it to provide honest portrayals of the streets and fringes of society, including gangsters, prostitutes, and junkies. “The Uncovering” involves the narrative space between endings and new beginnings and […]

Openings: Rooms @ Scion Space

On Saturday night, AM attended the opening of “Rooms” at Scion Space (previewed). The show, curated by Roger Gastman, certainly brought us back to the old school days of youth.  A wide array of nostalgic goodness such as Laser Tag, VHS lined living rooms, Michael Jordan & Dream Team posters, elementary school desks, bus stops, gothic throwbacks and even an outdoor street/play area were included.  There was literally something for everyone to reminisce on.  The artists: Adam Wallacavage, Bill Daniel, Chris Stain, Dan Monick & […]

Preview / Setup: Rooms @ Scion Space

AM swung by Culver City’s Scion Space as a large group of artists, namely Adam Wallacavage, Bill Daniel, Chris Stain, Dan Monick & Caitlin Reilly, Dueling VHS, Justin Van Hoy, Kime Buzzelli, and Rocky Grimes, were busy building out and setting up eight unique and different rooms throughout the massive space.  Curated by Swindle Magazine and “Exit Through the Giftshop” producer Roger Gastman, “Rooms” seems to be a re-visitation of missing youth, an exploration into the minds, hearts, and backgrounds of each artist. More preview […]

Preview: Christy Langer – “Meticulous Engagements” @ Shooting Gallery

Sculptor Christy Langer sent AM an exclusive preview of a couple of her new pieces that will be featured in the upcoming “Meticulous Engagements” show coming soon to the Shooting Gallery. Showing with Kris Kuksi (featured), Langer’s resin, fiberglass and oil painted animals appear to be the perfect compliment to Kuksi’s minutia assemblages. Stay tuned for a preview from Kuksi as well as the show approaches. Check out the full preview after the jump.

Openings: “Re-Creation II @ Ogilvy & Mather by Carmichael Gallery

One of the highlights of Armory Week was a pop-up show like none other thrown by the Carmichael Gallery and Jun Lee at the Ogilvy & Mather’s Manhattan corporate offices. Imagine allowing urban talents running a muck through each floor of office hallways and elevator entry ways creating gigantic colorful installations, filling the places where normally bland office interiors greeted you every Monday. Even the customary plasmas that housed generic greetings/company slogans where remixed with a rad loop of the artists installing their newly minted […]
