Previews: Pejac – “Waterline” (Paris)

From June 20 to June 24, Pejac will be hosting a new exhibition in Paris entitled Waterline inside an old ‘péniche’ boat moored right next to Notre-Dame. Like his show last year in Venice (covered), held in a gondola workshop, the Spanish artist has tailored his new body of work to fit the unconventional venue with a series of around 30 drawings and studies on paper. The imagery on display, much cleverly dealing with environmental and socio-political issues, are examples of the prep work that Pejac puts […]

Openings: JR x Massimo Bottura – “Le Reffettorio Paris”

Last month, Le Reffettorio Paris opened its doors with the help of famed chef Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana and artist JR (interviewed). Housed in the crypts of the historic Madeleine church in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, the concept behind the space fits nicely with the setting. Taking surplus ingredients from some of the city’s finest restaurants, Bottura and his team aim to serve 100 of the most socially vulnerable every night with a multi course meal – an upscale soup kitchen if you will. For their part, JR and Prune Nourry created […]

Streets: Escif – ‘Open Borders’ Mural @ Palais de Tokyo (Paris)

From May 4th, Palais de Tokyo in Paris will pay tribute to the history and legacy of the May 1968 events with a intervention by Escif, where he reproduced some of the famous writings from that period of student revolts. His creation completes the project, which was started in 2015 by Greek artist Stelios Faitakis, who realized two murals dedicated to the legacy of the situationist movement and civil unrest of May 1968. This intervention is part of the 10th installment of the LASCO Project (covered) curated by […]

Streets: D*Face – “Turn Coat” (Paris)

While in town last week for the opening of his show (covered) at Galerie Itinerrance, D*Face (interviewed) was able to get up with a massive mural in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. For those keeping score, this is the second piece (also see 2017) the British street artist has painted for “Street Art 13” project organized by the gallery. Entitled Turn Coat, the new work features some of D’s signature imagery and touches like the Lichtenstein inspired look and the wings. Photo credit: Spraying Bricks. Discuss D*Face here.

Upcoming: D*Face – “FORNEVER” @ Galerie Itinerrance

Earlier tonight, Galerie Itinerrance in Paris opened up a new show from D*Face (interviewed) entitled FORNEVER. For his first solo in France, the British artist presented a diverse mix of paintings on canvas, sculptures, installations, HPMs, serigraphs, and some fresh assemblages (seen here). The new imagery deals with how nothing is forever, with the old replaced with the new and the tensions that come with it. Of course, D also took time to paint a large mural for his fans in the City of Love (more on that later). […]

Installation: Leandro Erlich – “Sous le Ciel” @ Le Bon Marché

Recently in France, Leandro Erlich reimagined Le Bon Marché’s signature escalators, utilizing his penchant for illusory installations. Following in the footsteps of Ai Weiwei, Edoardo Tresoldi, and Chiharu Shiota, who have all transformed the interiors of the famed Parisian department store, the Argentinian artist added a twist to the escalator’s exterior as well as set up lights inside that changed depending on the hour and season. Rounding out the site-specific work entitled Sous le Ciel (after an Edith Piaf song) are mirrors that create an infinite optical illusion as […]

Sainer’s second solo show at Galerie Openspace (previewed) in Paris will shortly be entering its final week after opening at the start of December. The title of the exhibition – Chaotic Harmony – emphasises the symbiotic relationship between these two different states of being and this idea runs like a unifying thread through the varied and extensive exhibition. The 29 year old painter makes use of the gallery’s multiple spaces to explore the varied elements which make up his work. The landscapes are a mixture of intimate plein […]
