Openings: Kid Acne – “Stand & Deliver” @ C.A.V.E Gallery

Over the weekend, the C.A.V.E. Gallery hosted the opening reception for Kid Acne’s (interviewed) newest solo entitled Stand & Deliver. The UK-based artist brought a selection of work to the Venice showspace featuring his “stabby women,” some of which was set against a backdrop of a patterned motif seen frequently in his street work. Rounding out the show was a series of customized spray cans as well as a outdoor mural. He’ll be working on some other walls around the LA area so keep your eyes peeled. Photo credit: Richard […]

Openings: Anthony Lister @ New Image Art

Last night, New Image Art gallery unveiled the latest work by Australian artist Anthony Lister (interviewed). As we showed you earlier in the week with a video teaser (covered), he had been hard at work inside his studio preparing to unleash a new body of work. Now after visiting this exhibition, it’s safe to say that Lister has once again delivered a repertoire of artwork which clearly displays his unique and unmistakable style. The night featured Lister’s thematic take on the ballerina as both an image of […]

Viewpoints / Openings: Olek — “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone” @ Tony’s Gallery, London

AM was at Tony’s Gallery in Shoreditch on Thursday to see the first UK solo show by Olek (set-up and teaser photos here). The New York-based artist has been making the most of her extended London visit, transforming the ground floor of the gallery into a domestic setting filled with crocheted furniture and other household items. Everything but the entrance area, the ceiling, and a couple of plants has been given a second skin. The combination of brightly-coloured yarn and Olek’s signature camouflage pattern means […]

Openings / Streets: LUDO – “Super Discount” @ The Garage (Amsterdam)

Last night in Amsterdam, LUDO (interviewed) opened his third solo of the year at The Garage, bookending what has been a decidedly impressive and pervasive year both on the streets and indoors. Super Discount (previewed) diverged from the the Parisian artist’s graphite on paper modus operandi instead opting for screenprinted multiples on canvas. Inspired by Warhol’s production methodology and paying humble homage to his iconic Campbell’s soup collection, the series is comprised of nine provocative and visually compelling Del Monte can variations, each uniquely hand-finished […]

Openings: Blek le Rat – “60/30” @ 941 Geary

Blek le Rat opened up his latest exhibition, 60/30 Saturday at 941 Geary. The title of the exhibition represents his 60th birthday and 30 years of being an artist and celebrates a career that has heavily influenced the street art being put up today. The show consists mainly of large canvases featuring worked backgrounds and his signature stencil work, with a few collaborations with artists such as Hush and APEX in the mix. Copies of his new book that recounts his prolific 30 year career […]

Openings: Mitsy Ávila Ovalles – “When You Grow Up, Your Heart Dies” @ Cukui

Last Thursday, Bay Area artist Mitsy Ávila Ovalles opened up her latest solo show in her hometown of San Jose at Cukui, a clothing store that also holds monthly art exhibitions on one end. Her work is done in a wide variety of mediums that include painting, crochet and digital, which is heavily influenced by Mexican pop culture, b-list celebrities, food and sports (like a misguided Dodger fan). Most of her paintings are heavily textured and has the feel of a weathered collage (upon close […]

Openings: Augustine Kofie – “Circulatory System” @ White Walls

Saturday evening, White Walls opened its doors to Augustine Kofie’s second solo show at the gallery, Circulatory System (previewed in our studio visit). The new body of work consisted of 30 pieces including small studies, medium and large scale pieces on wood and canvas, as well as a few hand painted multiple prints. This show concentrates on circular shapes in an interconnect system, while consistently maintaining the draftsman-like quality in his signature style. Check out photos from opening night after the jump…

Openings: Tauba Auerbach – “Tetrachromat” @ Bergen Kunsthall (Norway)

After almost a year of steadfast anticipation, Tauba Auerbach finally pulled back the curtains and revealed the magic of her newest body of work this weekend at Bergern Kunsthall in Norway. Tetrachromat marks the booming artist’s first solo exhibition since signing with powerhouse Paula Cooper Gallery to great contention last fall, as well as signifies her first museum solo. Long experimenting with themes of dimensionality, the title of the show references a theory which supposes a small percentage of women have four color receptors rather […]

Openings: Chuck Close @ Blum & Poe

One of the most celebrated and revered American artists working today, Chuck Close recently unveiled an exhibition of brand new paintings, prints, and tapestries at Culver City’s Blum and Poe.  This is Close’s first solo show with the blue chip gallery and according to them, it “represents the most significant body of work assembled in Los Angeles in sixteen years.” The spectacular exhibition, which occupies the gallery’s entire first floor, provides ample evidence of the artist’s masterful skills as a painter, photographer, and printmaker and […]

Openings: Steve McCurry – “Iconic Photographs” @ Peter Fetterman Gallery

On display through November 30th at Peter Fetterman Gallery is an exhibition of works, entitled Iconic Photographs, from Steve McCurry, which chronicle the famous American photojournaist’s most important images. Of course, taking center stage is Afghan Girl, his most powerful and widely recognized photograph which was prominently featured on a 1985 cover of National Geographic depicting a young, then unidentified refugee in Pakistan escaping the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. His covert coverage of that Soviet war in Afghanistan, in which he disguised himself in native […]
