Openings: James Reka – “Olympvs” @ Avantgarden Gallery

On June 4th, Avantgarden Gallery in Milan opened OLYMPVS, a solo show by James Reka, that will stay on view until THE 10th of July. For this event, the Berlin-based artist created a coherent body of work that mirrors the aesthetics of ancient Greek culture. Showing the typical imagery of that period, through his almost abstract visual language, Reka created an interesting mixture of old and new. Using his strict geo shapes along with spraypaint transparency and solid fill ins, the artist depicts recognizable architectural elements such as arches and […]

Openings: Barry McGee & Todd James – “FUD” @ V1 Gallery

On May 28th, V1 gallery  in Copenhagen, or V1 contemporary art center as the artists renamed it for the occasion, hosted a preview of FUD, a two men show featuring  Barry McGee & Todd James. Being long time friends, this was the second time they exhibited together in Copenhagen. Matching their visual language that often celebrates ridiculousness and nonsense in any form, the show was titled with a made up word that can be found in James’ earlier works. Without being pretentious about the depth and meaning […]

Openings: Optimist – ‘Packrat’s Paradise’ @ LeQuiVive

LeQuiVive has been hosting some exciting exhibitions over recent months. Currently showing is Packrat’s Paradise by Optimist aka Tim the Optimist. The exhibition is as much an autobiography as it is an art show, with a large scale installation consisting of a variety of paintings on different mediums intertwined with ephemera and memorabilia of his life and the graffiti crew culture he has been immersed within for the last decade. The exhibition is seemingly well titled by the look of the sheer amount of ‘stuff’ crammed into […]

Openings: “Paper Party 2” @ Richard & Le Feuvre Gallery

Freshly opened Richard & Le Feuvre Gallery in Geneve, Switzerland, introduced their work to the local art lovers with an inaugural group show titled Paper Party 2. Combining works by eleven artists from five different countries, this large show featured about 50 original works on paper that will stay on view until the end of the year. For this exhibition, the gallery brought together artists that they consider as some of the more interesting that contemporary urban art can offer at the moment. Ranging in styles, the […]

On Thursday, the 30th of October, Sainer and Bezt, teamed up as Etam Cru, opened their first Italian show at Varsi Gallery in Rome. The young artistic duo that has been getting a lot of attention with their large scale murals worldwide but also with their fine art works, introduced a new body of work titled Bedtime Stories. For this show, the Polish artists created a coherent installation, painting the walls and floor of the gallery with their recognizable symbols – skulls, mushrooms, crowns, etc. Introducing […]

Openings: Tessar Lo – “Devices And The Virtues” @ Jaski Art Gallery

On the 27th of September, Jaski Gallery in Amsterdam introduced a new solo from Tessar Lo to their collectors and local art lovers. Devices And The Virtues is Lo’s third show with the gallery and it once again proved the strong connection and love between the artist and the city. For this show, the Toronto-based artist prepared several large canvases, some mid size ones, and a nice selection of drawings on paper that were displayed in an eye-catching cluster. Exploring and playing with his expressive, naive style, purposely minimizing his efforts, the […]

Openings: Todd “REAS” James – “Secret Garden” @ Galeria Patricia Armocida

After featuring his works in a couple of group shows over the years, Galeria Patricia Armocide recently opened a solo from Todd James. Entitled Secret Garden the show includes seven large-scale acrylic on canvas paintings and eight medium and small-scale gouache on paper paintings, and will stay on view until the 1st of August. Continuing his ongoing series of bright colored pieces capturing not so glamorous subjects and showing them in a new light, the work balances between ironic and erotic. His voluptuous blondes are naked and sexy, but […]

Opening: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “Good Knight” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery unveiled the latest solo show, titled Good Knight, by artist Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured). Just as his previous show a year ago (covered), this new body of work from the gifted painter brought in a massive crowd (including both fans and established artists like Laurie Lipton, Saber & Dabs Myla) eager to see his latest display of surreal and fantastical imagery. It’s safe to say that his work keeps getting better as time progresses with this exhibition displaying a variety of large and small […]

Openings: Mike Leavitt – “Empire Peaks” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York to check out a new showing from Mike Leavitt (interviewed) entitled Empire Peaks. Showing alongside Riusuke Fukahori’s work, which also had a three-dimensional feel to it, the new body of work from the Seattle-based Leavitt featured a mashup of historical figures and Star Wars characters, something we gave you a glimpse of in our earlier studio visit. Take a look at some photos of the new sculptures, like the Ghandi x Yoda figure above… Discuss Mike Leavitt here.
