Opening: Nicola Verlato & Caleb Brown – “Pagan Pop” & “A Modern World” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

A couple weekends ago, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery hosted new work from Nicola Verlato (featured) & Caleb Brown entitled Pagan Pop & A Modern World collectively. Featuring two surreal paintings styles that pair nicely together, the exhibition allowed fans to look into the imaginative minds of these two artists. On one side of the gallery, Verlato (seen above) created suspended human forms placed in beautifully rendered fantastical situations seen through the lens of how Western society has continually attempted to suppress its pagan roots. Not to be outdone, Brown painted his versions of […]

Studio Visit / Preview: Nicola Verlato – “Pagan Pop” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On Saturday night, September 7th, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles will welcome back Nicola Verlato and his surreal paintings for another showing (see 2012). The new work is collectively entitled Pagan Pop, a reference to his contemporary take on late medieval narrative painting and the theme of how Western society has continually attempted to suppress its pagan roots. The exhibition will feature three large scale pieces from Verlato, glimpses of which you can see in the studio visit below… Photo credit: ©Carlos Gonzalez. Discuss Nicola Verlato here.

Openings: “I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World” @ Roq La Rue

The I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World group show opened at Roq La Rue this past Friday to a large crowd which simultaneously got to see some great art and escaped the freezing temperatures outside. The title of the show is based upon a Nick Cave song of the same name, which finds the protagonist just after a bomb blast rocks a hotel as he speeds away, thanking his girl continually in the chorus. While some of the artists rendered the lyrics in […]

Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles welcomed local artist Nicola Verlato and his new paintings into their showspace with an opening reception. The new works collectively entitled Zero Gravity are beautiful executed with his characters and objects suspended in midair as if frozen in time. We already caught a glimpse of the new body of work during a studio visit last week, but nothing beats seeing the paintings in situ. Check out Verlato’s cinematic vision for yourself before the show closes on September 1st if in […]

Studio Visits / Videos: Nicola Verlato – “Zero Gravity” @ Merry Karnowsky

We were first introduced to the work of Italian-born, Los Angeles-based artist Nicola Verlato’s imagery back in April at a showing (covered) with Jonathan LeVine in New York. Since then, the painter has been compiling a series of work for his latest solo, Zero Gravity, that opens at Merry Karnowsky this Saturday, August 11th. His cinematic visions of suspended moments in time are mixed in with the impending possibility of the future crash of the social economical system. Take a look inside his studio in the photo set as he […]

Showing: Nicola Verlato – “How The West Was Won” @ Jonathan Levine

Recently at Jonathan LeVine in New York, Nicola Verlato opened up his solo exhibition entitled How The West Was Won alongside a solo from EVOL (covered). The series of new oil paintings from the Italian-born, Los Angeles-based artist show a talent for dramatic compositions and attention to detail that remind the viewer of old master paintings but remixed for modern time. The work follows a thematic tone that “refers to the culture clash between monotheism and polytheism throughout human history, a battle that the artist believes to […]
