Openings: “Flourish” @ Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum

Over the weekend, the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona hosted the opening of Flourish, a group show curated by Thinkspace Gallery. Over 100 artists contributed to the exhibition but the standouts for us were the murals from Esao Andrews and Nosego as well as a sweet hanging installation from Felipe Pantone. On May 12th, the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum will be opening Flourish, a group show curated by Thinkspace Gallery. Another week, another Streets: World Roundup. For this edition, our headlining mural is from the Los Angeles-based Andrew Hem (interviewed). This latest piece located on the rooftops of Koreatown features a break dancing character painted with a background that is meant to blend in with the sky under certain conditions. This week’s look at public art around the world is headlined by this new piece (source) from Case (aka Andreas von Chrzanowski) in Frankfurt, Germany. Painted at the construction site for the future European Central Bank headquarters, the MaClaim crew member painted Pinnochio being manipulated by a pair of hands, making some sort of political statement. This week’s roundup sees the return of David Ellis to the streets after the massive mural painted in Brooklyn last month. This latest tree piece was commissioned by Converse as part of they Wall to Wall campaign and features Ellis’ sinuous pattern (photo by Justin Carlson and courtesy of Joshua Liner Gallery). The location is on 23rd Street and 12th Ave in Chelsea, just a short walk from the Joshua Liner Gallery which recently curated a show with Ellis and Kris Kuksi in Los Angeles. Streets: World Roundup (July 16 – 22)

Leading off last week’s Streets: World Roundup is this amazing mural (seen above) painted over the course of a year by Josef Kristofoletti. The project was commissioned by the ATLAS Experiment at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research and was painted on the side of the ATLAS control room directly above the detector, near the Swiss-French border outside of Geneva by the Texas-based artist. Leading this week’s world roundup of street activity is this new mural from Specter (source). The storefront looks amazingly real and was painted for the Bushwick Five Points Festival in Brooklyn. For our summary of walls this week, we have for you as our featured wall – REYES in Detroit. The motor city has become one of the hotspots for street activity recently as the tanking economy has ironically led to more abandoned buildings facilitating the rise of public art. This week’s world roundup of street work is heavily tilted towards Art Basel Week Miami. With so many artists in town, there was bound to be some overlap on walls and in some cases – collaborations. Not sure if the Buff Monster & COPE2 piece above was planned as a tag team effort, but they seem to fit nicely together.
