Previews: “10 Year Anniversary Exhibition” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Streets: Patrick Shearn – “Liquid Shard” (Los Angeles)

Liquid Shard was an installation in downtown LA that was on view for two weeks created by Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics. The undulating piece featuring suspended holographic mylar and monofilament arranged in a long ribbon-like canopy in Pershing Square and measured 15,000 square feet in length. Upcoming: Yoskay Yamamoto – “In Between The Dreams” @ Giant Robot 2

Following up on a solo there in 2014 (covered), Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) will be opening a showing at Giant Robot 2 this Saturday, August 20th. Entitled In Between The Dreams, the exhibition looks to feature more of the locally-based artist’s recent work including sculptural pieces his iconic faces, as well his sunset inspired paintings and drawings. Openings: Guillermo del Toro – “At Home With Monsters” @ LACMA

Legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (renowned for movies such as Hell Boy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak) opened At Home With Monsters last weekend at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Openings: Cinta Vidal – “Gravities” @ Thinkspace

A couple weekends ago at Thinkspace, new paintings from Cinta Vidal collectively entitled Gravities were unveiled in their project room. The small selection of works featured her signature gravity defying globe like structures and their inhabitants. There was also a piece with a field of floating furniture which was mirrored by similar imagery on a wall mural the Spanish artist painted for the exhibition. Photo credit: Birdman Photos. Showing: Eishi Takaoka – “Socks” @ Giant Robot 2

Continuing his longstanding relationship with Giant Robot, Eishi Takaoka is currently showing a new body of work entitled Socks at their gallery location – GR2 in Los Angeles. The Japanese artist’s serene head sculptures usually include something sprouting or interacting with their faces, oftentimes carved from one piece of wood. These extrusions are outwardly manifestations of his bottled up emotions and hidden frustrations with lower middle class life in Japan. Discuss Eishi Takaoka here.

Showing: FriendsWithYou – “Light Wave” @ Santa Monica Pier

Currently showing at the Santa Monica Pier through September 8th (7-10pm on Thursdays) is a new installation from FriendsWithYou. Light Wave is the collective’s largest installation to date and was created in partnership with the iconic pier’s Twilight Concert Series as well as Snapchat. The huge inflatables and play with light creates a magical setting for beachgoers enjoy through the rest of summer. Discuss FriendsWithYou here.

Previews: Cinta Vidal – “Gravities” @ Thinkspace

This Saturday night (July 23rd) in Thinkspace’s project room, Cinta Vidal will be unveiling a new series of paintings featuring her signature gravity-defying imagery. When you look architectural structures that the Spanish artist paints, you will quickly see the inhabitants defy the laws of physics. The work for this exhibition are mainly her clusters of domestic and natural environments, although there is also one piece that feature her characters in a scattered field of suspended furniture, also something she has been known to paint.
