Continuing to collaborate with POW! WOW! Hawaii (2020 edition started this weekend), Thinkspace will putting their Exploring The New Contemporary Movement VII group show at Wade Warehouse (449 Cooke Street) on view from February 11-15. POW! WOW! Long Beach ’18: Papercut Lounge

As part of this year’s POW! WOW! Long Beach (more coverage here) the Papercut Lounge worked with a group of artists to make zines available to festival attendees (which you can still purchase online here). The popup space not only served as a shop but also featured a cascading installation of books by Olga Lah and a large painting from Brendan Monroe as well as hosted the kickoff and closing party for the week-long, city-wide event. Previews: Edwin Ushiro – “Graduation” @ Giant Robot 2

Continuing to show with Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be presenting a new body of work starting this Saturday (July 14th). As is his usual practice, the new exhibition, Graduation, will draw from nostalgic experiences growing up in Hawaii, producing haunting and ethereal imagery crafted with his unique mixed media process. On July 8th, Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles will be opening a new solo from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) entitled A Survey. Like his showing with the gallery back in 2015 (covered), the locally-based artist delves deep into his youth with nostalgic scenes from his experiences growing up in Hawaii. POW! WOW! Hawaii ’17 / Showing: Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Showing in associated POW! WOW! Hawaii through the tomorrow at the Honolulu Museum of Art School is the 4th annual Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Artists were asked to contribute 12 x 12″ pieces leading to a visually conforming display of works. Rounding things out was a showcase for Shok-1 (seen below) and a Homer Simpson x Banksy parody installation by Oak Oak (seen above). Previews: Edwin Ushiro – “Capturing What Still Glimmers” @ Giant Robot 2

Tomorrow night at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show entitled Capturing What Still Glimmers. Employing a laborious and unique technique (mark making and painting, then scanning and outputting to acrylic, Lucite or Plexiglass and then painted once again), the locally based artist is able to achieve a luminosity and ethereal quality to his work. The dream-like effect only enhances the nostalgic feel to his imagery as it harkens back to the experiences of his youth and the myths of Hawaii where he once resided. […]

On June 18th, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles. Just in time for summer, Capturing What Still Glimmers features nostalgic imagery from the artist’s youth growing up in Hawaii. Utilizing a unique process and technique, the locally-based painter’s work glows with an ethereal translucent quality that must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Discuss this show here. Preview: “Cat Art Show 2” @ Think Tank Gallery

From March 24-27, shortly after closing their cake-themed installation and special programing (covered), Think Tank Gallery in Los Angeles will be hosting the sequel group exhibition to 2014’s Cat Art Show. Over 70 artists including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, C215, Adam Wallacavage, Tim Biskup, Kozyndan, Luke Chueh, Brandi Milne, Natalia Fabia, Travis Lampe, Cyrcle., Jean Pierre Arboleda (seen above) and Edwin Ushiro will be contributing pieces inspired by their feline friends.
