Basel Week Miami ’12: LeBasse Projects @ PULSE

It’s time to start winding down our Basel Week Miami coverage here on AM with another look at the PULSE art fair (highlights here). We’ve already shared photos from a couple booths there (Joshua Liner & Jonathan LeVine), and there is a look at a third booth – LeBasse Projects. Included for the showing were works from artists like Yoskay Yamamoto, Seonna Hong, Thomas Doyle, Herakut, and Miss Van. Photo credit: Top image by Yoskay Yamamoto, All others by Arrested Motion. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Art Focus: Kazuki Takamatsu

We’ve touched on the work of Kazuki Takamatsu before here on AM in a couple group shows, but seeing an entire series of works at the Gallery Tomura booth at SCOPE Miami (highlights here) really piqued our interest. The Japanese artist based in Sendai combines the use of computer imaging with traditional techniques to create eerie ghostlike characters through the medium of acrylic and gouache. The use of depth mapping generates a topographical effect to the portraiture (with some similarities to the the work of El Mac) […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Art Focus: Jiro Takamatsu

During our stroll through the seemingly endless array of booths and artwork during Art Basel in Miami, we were stopped dead in our tracks by the solo from the late Jiro Takamatsu at McCaffrey Fine Art. The influential Japanese artist was known as a writer, sculptor, painter and printmaker with this showing focusing in on his famous shadow pieces. Although the booth was dominated by his large-scale portraiture, we were particularly drawn to his smaller works like the key shadows hanging from a hook as well as a dollhouse […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Art Focus: Jorge Santos

As you saw from our coverage and cover image for CONTEXT Art Miami, we were quite taken by an artist new to AM – Jorge Santos. Showing with 101/Exhibit as well as Evan Lurie Gallery, the American painter takes inspiration from the political turmoil and struggles of his formative years in Angola and Portugal to create surreal and brooding scenes, a seemingly frozen snapshot in some fantastic story. With his works overflowing with intriguing characters and details, we found ourselves continually discovering new things as […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Brian Viveros – “War of the Roses” @ SCOPE / Thinkspace

After posting up the photos from Amy Sol’s (interviewed) solo during this year’s SCOPE art fair in Miami, it’s now time to share the other artist featured in the Thinkspace booth – Brian Viveros. We caught an early glimpse at the new body of work, entitled War of the Roses, during a studio visit last month, and now fair-goers were able to enjoy what we had experienced – femme fatale portraiture with a Spanish twist and plenty costumed goodness. Take a look at the rest of the photos below… […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Matthew Marks Gallery @ Art Basel

The only thing you need to know about Matthew Marks Gallery is that it represents Jasper Johns, (arguably) the greatest living artist in the world. Looking further, you will see that the gallery also represents other top artists as well. Its booth at Art Basel this year includes an orange, two-panel painting by Ellsworth Kelly, new sculptures by Charles Ray and Katharina Fritsch, three recent paintings by Paul Sietsema, new sculptures by Darren Almond, as well as pieces by Willem de Kooning, Luigi Ghirri, Thomas Demand, […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Miami – Highlights

One of the mainstay satellite fairs in Miami was Art Miami. As previously seen in our coverage of their offshoot fair CONTEXT where pieces purported to be street works from Banksy (not authenticated from PC though), this combined pair of fairs was a feast for the eyes. Numerous mediums were on display – not only classic paintings, but sculptures, installations & photographs galore. With dealers and galleries showing side by side, this fair had a wide range of artists in varying stages of career development. From […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: White Cube @ Art Basel

Already one of the biggest contemporary art galleries in London, White Cube now has the distinction of being Damien Hirst’s only representative gallery after the artist infamously left Gagosian Gallery. With an showing featuring artwork by Hirst, Tracey Emin, Zhang Huan, Christian Marclay, and emerging stud artist Theaster Gates, White Cube offered visual treats for any art lover visiting its Art Basel Miami Beach booth. See their pieces, as well as work by others here… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Streets: World Roundup (Dec 10 – Dec 16)

Our global summary of street work returns this week with a look around the world but heavily tilted towards Florida due to Basel Week Miami. Kicking things off though is this new piece in Sri Lanka from the UK-based Phlegm. The rare splashes of color seen stem from his use of car paints in this wall. Other notable pieces come from RONE – Miami, Meggs – Miami, Phibs – Miami, Escif – France, Belin x Koka – Mexico (source), Dabs Myla truck – Miami, Prime […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Team Gallery @ Art Basel

Each year at Art Basel Miami Beach, Team Gallery exhibits a collection of some of the most exciting young(er) artists at the fair with work that well represents each one’s respective practice. You can depend on Team to showcase Ryan McGinley, one of its biggest stars, with a couple of breathtaking works at their booth. Other standouts include Banks Violette, Cory Arcangel, and Gert & Uwe Tobias. See images of the pieces below… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.
