Previews: “Suggestivism: Resonance 2018” @ Spoke Art (New York)

On July 7th, Spoke Art’s New York location will be hosting the Suggestivism: Resonance 2018 group exhibition. The long running series of shows are the brainchild of artist Nathan Spoor, who is curating the roster as well as contributing a piece to the show. Combining the talents of over 50 artists, the plan is to showcase “both emerging and established artists, the exhibition encapsulates the Suggestivist art movement, incorporating elements of narrative storytelling, figurative works and imagined universes.” Participating Artists: Esao Andrews | Jana Brike | […]

Openings: Allison Sommers & Ozabu – “Bruxism” & “彷徨 (Wander)” @ Thinkspace

A couple weekends ago, Allison Sommers (interviewed) & Ozabu opened their shows at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Bruxism in the main space was an immersive solo from Sommers featuring her increasingly abstracted meaty subject matter at times housed in various paraphernalia, completed by an installation that was like a record of how the new pieces were conceived and completed. In the project room, Ozabu presented nine new works collectively entitled 彷徨 (Wander), her debut solo with the gallery, with details that need to be seen in person to be appreciated. Openings: “One Page” @ Roq La Rue

It seems strange to write about a show that one curated, so I’ll just give a little history about how the show came together, and let the photos speak for themselves. A few years ago Ryan Heshka had a solo show at Roq La Rue which included a couple pieces that were sequential stories and presented as stand-alone comics. They fascinated me and I wondered what a full show, with an assortment of artists might be like. The planning began and a date was chosen […]

Openings: Art Nerd New York – “George Hearts Maria” @ Helium Cowboy

Our friends at Art Nerd New York recently invaded Hamburg, Germany for a special group show at Helium Cowboy. The exhibition entitled George Hearts Maria is themed around the tale of forbidden romance between the Prince George of Wales and commoner Maria Fitzherbert. While separated, they each had miniature eyes (of each other) painted so they could stare at them without getting caught by the royal family. Artists such as Allison Sommers, Beau Stannton, Ian Kuali’i, Jon Burgerman, Molly Crabapple, Ryan Brennan, Zac Braun and […]

Openings: Allison Sommers – “Potter’s Field” @ Thinkspace

Recently, Thinkspace hosted the work of Allison S0mmers (interviewed) in an exhibition titled Potter’s Field alongside the showing from Esao Andrews (covered). The new body of work showed off Sommers’ unique perspective on themes such as war, violence, and the way these factors affect the human being. Her illustrations invite the viewer to study it up close and although the artworks may not seem large in size, the small details she infuses into her artwork add another level of dimensionality which is hard not to notice. More […]

Teaser: Crazy 4 Cult 5 @ Gallery 1988

Love it or hate it, Crazy 4 Cult was probably one of the shows that started the current trend of group shows inspired by the entertainment industry. Come July 8th, the fifth rendition of the exhibition based thematically on cult films will open it’s door to movie buffs and art collectors alike at the Gallery 1988 in Melrose. Seen above is In the Garden of Audrey, Allison Sommers’ (interviewed) take on The Little Shop of Horrors. Take a look at the list of artists after […]

Charity: “Artist Help Japan” Art Auction

Christina Conway, who if you remember curated the kokeshi show (covered), has again put her curatorial skills to work – this time to benefit the Japan relief efforts. Artists like Audrey Kawasaki, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang, Allison Sommers and many more were asked to paint “Emas” – small wooden tablets left at Japanese shrines, usually with an image on one side and a handwritten wish or prayer on the other. These small pieces of art were then put up for auction here, where your bids […]
