POW! WOW! ’17 / Streets: Recap

After showing you some in-progress shots and some sneak peeks of the massive amount of work in progress on the streets of Kakaako, we now have a recap of many of the walls and public interventions that were created for POW! WOW! Hawaii. This year’s event had locations that were more compact and centrally located, leading to a more easily navigated set of murals. Continued good weather made for good painting conditions (albeit a little on the sunnier side) as POW! WOW! Hawaii draws closer to conclusion. Streets / Recap: POW! WOW! Worcester

A couple weeks ago, POW! WOW! Worcester welcomed in artists from 8 different countries as well as locally from Massachusetts. In association with the event, there were gallery shows and other activities, but the main draw was the live painting (like in other POW! WOW! events around the world). Streets: ABOVE – “Incognito” (Johannesburg)

Earlier this month, ABOVE (interviewed) was in South Africa painting a mural he has entitled Incognito for the City Of Gold Festival. Measuring 33 meters tall and 17 meters wide, the wall took six full days to paint and utilized over 20 colors. Located in Jeppestown, piece featuring the American artist’s iconic arrow imagery and can even be seen from the M1 freeway framed by the iconic Johannesburg skyline. Photo credit: Cale Waddacor. Openings / Setup: CUT IT OUT! @ Urban Nation

A couple weekends ago, Urban Nation continued their ongoing arts program in Berlin with a new show curated by Henrik Haven & Olly Walker entitled CUT IT OUT!. Focusing on the artistic merit of the stencil, the group exhibition brought together some well known street artists skilled with the technique. Previews: Above – “Remix” @ Inner State Gallery

One of the legends of the early street art movement, Above (interviewed), is currently in Detroit, almost at the end of his two months residency with Inner State Gallery. The photos we just received show some game changing new works he’s been creating for his solo show Remix, opening on the 21st of November in the Motor City. Streets: ABOVE – 46 shutters in 48 hours (London)

Prolific Bay Area bomber ABOVE (interviewed) recently completed a marathon session in London at the Chrisp Street Market in Poplar over the weekend. Using over 100 cans of spray paint while making his mark on 46 shutters in a span of 48 hours, ABOVE surely came close to some sort of record while covering over 19 shop fronts with his iconic arrow motif. Streets: World Roundup (Oct 21 – Oct 27)

This week’s Streets World Roundup is headlined by the latest piece from Banksy during his month long artist residency on the streets of New York. Painted on Day 28 of the project, this wall in Coney Island muses on what a robot would paint if he was to do graffiti.
