Openings: Kevin E. Taylor – “Dislocated” @ Eleanor Harwood

Earlier this month at the Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco, Keven E. Taylor put on a show within a show in a sense as he rendered various animals, birds, and fish on display inside his paintings at what looks to be a museum. Disclocated examines concepts of isolation, exhibition and preservation with the subjects removed from their natural state and frozen in a moment of time and forces the viewer to consider if this is the future of our companions on this earth. Openings: Marion Peck – “What You Are, So Once Were We” @ Sloan Fine Art

A couple weeks ago, Marion Peck along with husband Mark Ryden hosted a book signing for Peck’s first fine art monograph, Animal Love Summer, at Sloan Fine Art in New York. This coincided with her recently opened and current show What You Are, So Once Were We which featured new paintings (large and small) and sculptural pieces. What really drew us in though were the portrait pieces styled after vintage photographs, each with a story to tell. Take a look at more photos after the […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Ian Francis @ Joshua Liner Gallery

As we mentioned in the Kris Kuski article, Joshua Liner Gallery’s booth was one of the most stunning that we saw at SCOPE Miami this year. Showcasing a trinity of heavy talent that the Chelsea gallery will represent in the upcoming year, it wasn’t a surprise to see passersby drawn to the dynamic displays. AM favorite Ian Francis (featured) created a fresh batch of works for Basel Week and his warped environments were as intriguing and hypnotic as we have come to expect from the […]

Videos: Anish Kapoor’s India Homecoming

Anish Kapoor, arguably the most famous sculptor alive, recently returned to India for his first solo exhibition split between Delhi at the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Mehboob Studios in Mumbai, the city where he was born. The thirty year retrospective, which is somewhat of a homecoming 40 years later for Kapoor who left the country when he was 17, features many of his most famous works like the pigment pieces, the distorted mirrors, and shooting into the corner. Take a look at […]

Teaser: Candice Tripp @ Copro Gallery

Something to look forward to in March next year will be some new paintings from Candice Tripp (interviewed) in Los Angeles at Copro Gallery. After a strong showing at the Joshua Liner Gallery last year (covered), we are really looking forward to seeing her new body of work. Here is a peek at what she’s been working on, a partial shot of her most time consuming painting ever. Discuss Candice Tripp here.

Teaser: Hajime Sorayama – “1970 – 2010” @ Gering & Lopez Gallery

Known for his futuristic and sultry renderings of woman, as displayed during his solo in Tokyo earlier this year (covered), Hajime Sorayama will be showing his newest body of work, 1970 – 2010, stateside with Gering & Lopez Gallery in New York shortly after the ball drops. The veteran Japanese artist, perhaps best known in the US for his collaborative effort with KAWS in designing the metallic No Future Companion, has successfully exhibited his pin-up style portraits all over the globe. While specific opening and […]

Update: Audrey Kawasaki

Now that her whirlwind tour and shows in Australia are over, it appears Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) is starting to work on her next series of paintings. Judging from this piece (photo put through the Instagram filter), perhaps we will see a more somber body a work and a return to the “dark wood” pieces seen in her show in Italy in 2008 (covered). This piece could be going to one of the two shows she probably will be involved with next year in Los Angeles (Merry […]

Openings: “Dirty Little Secret” @ Indica on 11th (Mallick Williams)

AM recently had the pleasure of attending a special group show curated by our friend Wendy Asher, who you may remember from her appearance in Exit Through the Gift Shop. Held at Indica on 11th (now known as Mallick Williams) in Chelsea, the show featured fresh works from Tobias Keene, Laura Keeble, Paul Hazelton, K-Guy and Nicolas Bowers. The opening was packed from the moment the doors were opened and we had to go back a second time to get a proper look at this great […]

Ryan McGinness – “Black Holes” @ Phillips de Pury (NYC)

New York may be freezing this time of the year, but for the holidays it has some of the coolest displays of public visuals. From Rocafeller Center to the Empire State Building, everything lights up for the hustle and bustle in the streets. This year, Ryan McGinness has created a special treat for the people who happen by Chelsea. Starting tomorrow a special exhibition Black Holes will be open at Phillips de Pury’s 15th St. location (Mon-Fri 10am-6pm). But wait there’s more. If you remember […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Sikkema Jenkins & Co.

New York’s highly prestigious Sikkema Jenkins & Co. had many ooohs and aahs by visitors at their Art Basel Miami Beach booth due particularly to the piece above by one of the most talked-about artists recently – Mark Bradford.  The large-scale piece was one of AM’s favorites at the fair and magnificent to look at and stand in front of.  The booth included work by many other acclaimed artists, such as Kara Walker, Vik Muniz, and William Cordova.  It was quality throughout as you will […]
